Getting light into the centre of a deep flat-roof extension, and detailing the lantern so it stays weathertight for the long run.
The deeper an extension goes, the harder daylight has to work to reach the middle of it. A roof lantern solves that by dropping light straight down into the centre of the plan, where windows in the walls cannot reach.
The catch with any opening in a flat roof is water, so the value is in the detailing: the upstand, the flashings and the falls around the lantern are what keep it dry long after the novelty of the light has worn off.
